Socorro Island offers big animal diving at its best! You will get the chance to swim with dolphins, humpback whales (Jan-Apr), tuna, whale sharks (Nov-Dec), giant manta rays, hammerheads and up to five other species of sharks. and, of course, giant manta rays. The great thing about Socorro is that no two dives are exactly alike! Whether its a game of acrobatics with a dolphin, hovering in awe as humpback whales swim past or simply being mesmerized by the three or four giant mantas circling you, you're sure to experience an unforgettable dive on this eight night, nine day package.
During this trip you can expect 22 dives plus a thrilling night snorkel with silky sharks hunting under the ship's deck lights.The giant pacific mantas which you will meet at Socorro are the largest of the rays and are often thought to be the most majestic creatures in the ocean. These giants often come very close to divers, sometimes less than a meter. What is even more extraordinary is that the local population of bottlenose dolphins have learned to mimic the behavior of the giant mantas. It is very likely that these wild dolphins will also move in close and interact with divers during your trip.
November to December
Diving at Socorro is all about big animals and it is especially famous for up close and intimate interactions with giant mantas and dolphins, not to mention 10 different species of sharks. Water temperatures in November and December are the warmest of the year in the low 80's. Special feature this time of year includes seeing whale sharks in the blue water with brilliant visibility.
January to April
Up close interaction with giant mantas and dolphins happens consistently year-round at Socorro. From January to April, the water temperatures start chilling down to 73 - 74 degrees, when 1200 humpback whales from Alaska migrate down to Socorro for mating. You will see loads of whales on the surface and you will hear them singing underwater. You may even hear them singing through the hull of the ship at night.
May to July
May to July is bait ball Season! Scientific research indicates that there are more giant mantas at Socorro during bait ball season than any other time of year. It always seems like everything intensifies with more sharks including schooling silky sharks, schooling hammerheads, lots of tuna and pelagic fish and even pilot whales. Water temperatures during these months range from mid - high 70's.
