Escape to Argentina for this four-day rainbow and brown trout fishing excursion for two people in northern Patagonia with four nights of five-star lodging, meals and guiding included.

Wade, float and fish with a fellow angler for three and a half days and relax during your four-night stay at a five-star, modern lodge in northern Patagonia, Argentina. Rainbow, brown and brook trout as well as landlocked salmon all thrive in this region and make for great fishing from both rivers and lakes. The location of this guided trip and its first-class service make for the perfect fly fishing excursion of a lifetime.

The Lodge

This lodge overlooks the tumbling Chimehuin River and has access to the greatest diversity of trout fisheries in northern Patagonia. You will be within steps of the notorious Chimehuin River's trophy trout and never more than 45 minutes from the fabled trout fishing waters of The Malleo, Collon Cura and Alumine rivers, which put Patagonia on the fly fishing map of the world.

This lodge boasts amenities including air conditioning, broadband wireless internet and internet phone. This beautifully-appointed lodge can accommodate 10 guests in five large bedrooms, each with a private bathroom and hot-water shower. The lodge also features two common living rooms, a fly tying desk, reading/internet room, open kitchen and a large dining room with a common table for up to 12 guests.

Northern Patagonia, Argentina

This lodge is located on the boundaries of Lanin National Park in northern Patagonia, which offers a majestic landscape throughout its almost 1.5 million acres. This property is dominated by Lanin Volcano which has a peak of 11,300 feet and is adorned by snow and dry lava throughout the year.

This area has more than 20 trout rich lakes which feed a network of rivers that attract the attention of fly fishermen from all around the world every year.

Sample Itinerary

The following itinerary is based upon the waters this outfitter typically fishes. Your actual itinerary may vary according to your fishing preferences and prevailing weather, temperature, water levels, fish migration and the opinions of the guides. Your guide may also arrange trips to other great fisheries further from the lodge at your request.

Day 1

The outfitter will greet you at San Martin de los Andes Airport and then take you to the lodge.

After a quick lunch and license purchase ($80 per person) you will float the Chimehuin River from town to Curva del Manzano, “apple tree bend”, which is clearly visible from the road coming from the airport. This stretch is also called “the miracle mile” as it produces a lot of fish and you may fish from both banks throughout the season. You will have plenty of time for a great late-afternoon fish for rainbow and brown trout using floating lines and a “stimulator-nymph” combo. Chernobyl ants with a prince dropper three feet below the surface works great too.

The guide will take you back to the lodge around 9:30 PM for a first-class dinner.

Recommended rods: 5/6 wt with floating lines and 9’ to 12’ leaders, or a fast sink tip with a streamer at night.

Day 2

After breakfast the guide will drive you to the Lower Malleo River. This section of the river is located in the Mapuche Reservation Amutuy Quime. This river only allows wade fishing but there are hundreds of pools to fish all day long. Your group will move around by truck to find the most productive pools. The same stimulator/chernobyl ant/hopper-nymph combo works for this type of fishing. Caddis and mayflies are ever present in the Malleo. Late afternoon your guide may switch you to a weighted streamer or pancora crab imitation to try to catch a trophy fish.

Recommended rods: 4/5/6 wt with floating lines and 7’ to 12’ leaders

Day 3

Your day will start on the upper Collon Cura river. The Collon Cura is a large river filled with brown trout, rainbow trout and Perca, the area's native fish. Percas put up a nice fight, much like a brown trout, and eat whatever you throw at them. You will float most of this river and stop and wade the many channels formed around the islands in the river. There are red stag and guanacos on the banks that will provide for some stellar scenery. This river is best fished with streamers and either a sink tip with big streamers or pancora crab imitations. However, if you get a really good catch, you’ll most likely switch to floating lines. During warm days you will also use the stimulator-prince combo. There are great caddis hatches late afternoon.

Recommended rods: 5/6/7/8 wt with floating lines and 9’ to 12’ leaders, sink tips type 130 to 200 grain or shooting heads with 4’ leaders.

Day 4

Today your guide will drive you to Tromen Lake, below the shadows of Lanin Volcano and three miles from the Chilean border. You will fish the lake for trophy rainbow, brown and brook trout from rafts and cast to submerged logs, weed patches, obstacles and boulders where big trout live. There is a tiny spring creek that can be fished for small brookies or you may fish the outlet of this creek for trophy size brook trout up to seven pounds while your guide cooks you an Argentinean Asado (barbecue).

If you are in the mood for walking, there is a 40 minute walk to the mouth of the Malleo river. Fishing with dry flies sometimes produces non-stop action for rainbow trout and large rainbows or browns early or late in the season.

Recommended rods: 5/6/7 weight with floating lines and 9’ to 12’ leaders, sink tips type 130 to 200 grain or shooting heads with 4’ leaders with wooly buggers, muddler minnows, bunny leeches, etc.

Day 5

The outfitter will take you and your guest to San Martin de los Andes for some shopping and lunch, depending on flight departure time, and then take you to Chapelco Airport to catch your flight home.
