There are several members of the salmon family which forgo any sort of life at sea and instead live year-round in the rivers and streams of North America. You know them as trout, and they come in several different shapes, sizes and colors.
Rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout are indigenous to the cool waters of the Sierra Nevada, Rocky Mountains and Appalachian region, while brown trout were imported from their native Europe in the late 1800s. Other species and variations include lake trout, bull trout, golden trout, tiger trout (hybrid) and Dolly Varden (named for a Charles Dickens character), all of which may be caught with a variety of techniques, most notably by imitating a variety of insects and their various life stages (matching the hatch).
