Tarpon are easily the most popular trophy fish in the world, and for good reason. These mythical, metallic beasts are found throughout the Atlantic coast, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, and can tip the scales at nearly 300 pounds. Anyone who’s ever seen a photo or video of a silver king exploding out of the water covets a hookup of their own.
Primarily inshore fish, tarpon prefer shallow estuaries around mangrove forests, salt marshes and seagrass areas. They tolerate a wide salinity range, and juveniles will enter fresh waters in search of baitfish. Between May and September, during the spawn, is the best time to hook a giant tarpon.
